The P51 Mustang RC model airplane by Harbor Freight is one of the best value in RC model aviation. It is very easy to crash and this little airplane is quick and not for the beginner, but with some practice, the Harbor Freight P51 Mustang RC airplane will give you hours of enjoyment. You can also add enjoyment by placing an on board mini DV video camera on the RC airplane. I used the keychain camera 808 #16. The motors in these planes are brushed and don’t have too many hours of life so don’t run them unless you are actually flying the plane. You will crash this RC airplane so many times, as I did, and with some tape and glue, the plane still keeps on flying.
The radio controlled model airplane kit from Harbor Freight comes in about 8 pieces. The mini DV keychain 808 camera not included, but you knew that. You will be ready to fly in just minutes out of the box, if you have a charged battery. It will take 3 hours to fully charge the RC P51 Mustang’s on board battery. Start off by installing the landing gear. You will need to place the landing gear on so the spring protrudes out towards the front of the wing. This appears backwards, but it’s the only way to keep nose of airplane up. You also need to place gear in this direction to keep center of gravity adjusted. Not balancing the CG, on the P51 Mustang RC model plane by Harbor Freight, will cause a crash just about every time. I removed the landing gear since I will be flying in a grass field. Just make sure you totally kill throttle when landing to avoid damage to propeller. You will probably break a few props, but they are easily available from your local hobby store for $1.50. Get a larger prop for the P51 for more power and control in windy conditions. You can actually fly the P51 inverted, with larger propeller. You can also find the mini DV 808 keychain video camera there.
You then want to install the horizontal stabilizer on the Harbor Freight P51 RC Airplane, but reinforce the double sided adhesive tape, that comes already applied to one side, with some foam friendly glue. I showed this in a Harbor Freight P51 Mustang RC airplane MOD (modification) video that you can see linked to this video. Next install the vertical stabilizer and reinforce with small amount of glue as well. I also recommend adding some glue to the control horns because they come lose after few flights and crashes. You do not want any play in these control links on the P51 Mustang.
Then you need to install the propeller on the Harbor Freight P-51 Mustang radio controlled model airplane along with the nose cone. There is an insert in the cone that you may have to pull out. After you bolt the propeller on the plane, you then screw that nosecone hub on all the way to the bolt and then press the cone one and align it to the propeller. This nosecone holds up pretty well when the P51 Mustang RC plane crashes, but will push in to the prop and break the prop in a plane crash as seen this video with the on board DV camera. MIni DV 808 keychain camera was placed with double sided foam tape just in front of vertical fin.
Bolt the wing on to the Harbor Freight P51 Mustang RC airplane and connect the aileron servo in the process. Place the battery in to the nose of the radio controlled airplane and check center of gravity. You may want to place pieces of foam in the nose of the P-51 Mustang to hold battery in place or it will shift back and forth. changing the center of gravity and causing the Harbor Freight P51 Mustang radio controlled plane to crash. Clip the cockpit cover in place and your ready to go crash this thing!

Keenan Lee says:

Try to switch out your receiver with a 2.4GHz type and transmitter. Also,
a few carbon fiber spars in strategic locations will help keep the plane
together. Check CG too, I believe that will help correct your wind
problem. Good luck.

The harbor freight P51 Mustang is a great little radio controlled plane for
the money. Harbor Freight Tools is the best. This plane is not for the
beginner though!

Victor Vallejo says:

I’ve flown re quadcopters and helicopters before, and I’m kind of a pro at
them. Do you think it’s just as easy as flying a quad or helicopter?
Because I got 2 of those P51 Mustang planes for 25 bucks, it was a bargain.
And they’re in good condition too! But I really want to know if flying
planes are easy, if not even easier than quads and helis. Thanks!
