A flying wing is one of the most popular forms of RC plane for FPV use these days.
Two of the leading contenders are the RV Jet from Range Video and the Go Discover from Hobby King.
In this video, I take a look at both models in terms of “what’s in the box” and I end up doing a build of the Go Discover — if only to make some room in the studio.
It’s starting to look a lot like “you get what you pay for” with these models. The Go Discover is cheaper than the RVJet but it certainly lacks the “polish” and build-quality.
Several small (but very annoying) deficiencies in the Go Discover assembly process turned what should have been a 10-minute build into an hour and ten minute build.
Pro’s for the Go Discover at this stage:
– it’s cheap. You get quite a lot for your $130 or so when buying the PNF version
– it has *plenty* of room inside. Cavernous is the word I’d use.
– the quality is not too bad, all things considered
Cons:
– the fit and finish is disappointing when compared to the RV Jet
– no spare dome is included and the supplied one was dirty and scratched
– the instructions say “no more than 20 seconds at full throttle” – what the?

Well, it appears Hobby King has bit you in the arse and left it a bit
chapped. Been there and had that, but for different reasons. Hardest
people to pay for the products due to their weird charge card acceptance.
Been buying from them for various parts and pieces for years because I
build from my own designs. Howsomeverandfurthermorer, their prices appear
to be the best in he world, at least when ordered from China. We’ll see how
long that lasts, eh?
Had less problems with their products than from the US based model
dealers I dealt with for most of my 75 years.
I have had many orders from China before their US stores opened.
Harder to order from here in the states, for God sake!

I really enjoy your RC channel but was disappointed after viewing Go
Discover versus RVJet FPV wing RC planes (part 1) that part 2 doesn’t seem
to exist? I’m left hanging (I viewed it on 22 December 2014)!
Where is part 2 please?
Not counting the go pro camera, how much do each cost with the controller
and goggles?
Bang for the buck is there. If your a flyer that understands the medium
then this bird shouldn’t be an issue for that price. I don’t think I’ve
even had an ARF that I was truly satisfied with every aspect of it’s
construction and in the end modified it before it’s maiden. Keep up the
good work!!

so you would rather spend 240 on the rv jet? my advice is dont ever spend
240 on styrofoam it doesn’t even come with any electronics. think about it
you have to buy an esc motor and servos. which is an extra 100 $ . now you
have spent 340 on styrofoam . bad decision.. BUY THE GO DISCOVER . !! and
put your 200 dollar savings into your new fpv goggles my friends. if you
don’t like how the wing fits, then epoxy them on. who cares if it takes 1
hour to build . building is the fun part. and the clear dome is anti
reflective in case you didn’t know. you can buy 2 go discovers for the
price of 1 rvjet

Hobby king copy EVERYTHING !!! If I bought out a special pencil hobby king

Bruce , I really do love R.C Model reviews and X-jet channel , but there
are so many videos that the second part never happens , I would love to see
the RV jet finished and compared to the Go discover or at least the
Go-discover flight , and at least a comment on what happened to the Hobby
King Turbine jet engine , part 1 an 2 build videos but no final build . I
understand your frustrations with the Go-Discover not going together well ,
So Bruce please understand ours , Finish what you promise . its only
because I love watching so much that I want to see the end videos finished
, please please please

years. A lot has certainly changed in that time and I don’t mind telling
you I’m a little bit lost with all this FPV and 2.4ghz malarkey, but hey,

Other than the possible benefit of drag reduction to duration and range, I
don’t get the point of putting a distorting, glare producing, sure to be
scratched non-optical dome and solar furnace electronics cooker in the
nose. Unless one wants to sacrifice FPV fidelity for (how much of an
actual increase in?) range/duration, I don’t see it as a good trade-off.

I just got my RV jet a few days ago, and it came with 3 domes, but yes it
was £300+ but even if It was >£200 I would expect it to fit properly
Depending on an in-the-air flight review, I still think I would buy this
plane.

I hate when my dome gets buggered.
I saw someone mention that the interface between the dome and the black
camera shield on the rv jet was very well engineered as an attempt to
minimize glare…. The go discover is apparently a poor copy that missed
the point of making the black plastic move with a minimum gap between it
and the dome. I would love for you to compare the gap between the dome and
camera light shield on the two.
Accept seconds, it’ll become the norm. Buy quality..
That planes an ugly piece of foam
Great review so far Bruce. I felt your review pointed out areas to watch
for when putting the Go Discover plane together. I appreciate that you
don’t gloss over issues but point them out so we know what to expect when
purchasing. May not be too serious or affect flight but I want to know of
potential issues/frustrations ahead of time so I can be prepared to address
them. Looking forward to Part 2

Looking into getting a wing myself soon, so, I’ve been researching. On the
FPV side of things, people seem to love Skywalker stuff but they have a
reputation for bad fit issues, worse, arguably than the Go Discover.
Bruce does point out that the problems are reasonably easy to fix. If I
had the cash, it’d probably be an RV,, mind you…
What did you come up with as the best FPV gear to use? Or should I look at
Part 2 and Part 3 for these answers?

If your not taking the wings off (due to the wing clips) try reinforced
tape over the wing to body joint. It will make the joint smoother and help
it to line up, and slightly stiffen the joint.

personality i think the go discover is very much up to standard and one of
the nicer models on the market

You’re right. It’s very inexpensive, so really, who cares? I’ve had the
X8, RV Jet, Sky Eye, FX79 Buffalo. After you handle the plane a few times,
land it not quite right, that dome will be scratched. Even totally clean,
the dome will show light refraction at certain angles to the sun. The real
advantage to the dome is you greatly reduce the wind noise that the camera
mic picks up. Those domes are gimmicks. Best bang for the buck is the Sky
Eye but if you want a wing, I think this Discover may be it. Fit and
finish? Let’s face it, even the RV Jet has gaps and it has “unique” flying
characteristics (read: “odd”) and after a few dings and scratches, it won’t
look any different than any other plane in your hanger. Same goes for the
Buffalo except the Buffalo has no surprises in the flying department. If I
were to do it all over again and could only have one, I’d just get the
Discover and be done with it. 1.25 hrs of build time? That’s nothing to
get a PNP into the air. As an RC hobbyist, it’s part of the routine to
fiddle with the little stuff to get it right. Regardless of the cost of
the plane, you still have to fiddle to some extent, so why not just get
something reasonably priced and make it work well for you? I have $500.00
planes that still need fiddling.
Bruce, you forgot to mention the positives. You said at the end that
you’ll start with the negatives, but seemed to forget to get onto the
positives. Were there any positives?
I am yet to have a single Hobby king part fail , I have been a platinium
member for about 3 years and am still using every , plane , battery, esc
and motor I ever bought from there . Sure a few things need tweaking here
and there but even expensive kits have their share of that. I have have
expensive esc that I paid three times the amount for go up in flames upon
the first use . Infact I have three twister 3d helis and every one of their
esc failed with in thirty or forty seconds of use and none got to actually
even fly .. now they all have turnigy sentry esc in them and flew quite
happily, untill the soft aluminium mainshafts in them exploded !
Once again the so called cheap and nasty Hobby king pro 450 are way better
quality than the expensive Twisters .
Yes you do get what you pay for , the higher you pay the more you get
ripped off.
I dont know how many times I have gone into a Hobby shop and seen Turnigy
or other Hobby king products for sale being sold for 3 or for times their
normal price .
Sure I have had magnets come loose in motors , not just hobby king ones
either , but a little devcon and 3 years later they are still going.
To many of us are too used to being spoon fed and everything done for us ,
to any one that has modelled for years a little tweaking here and there is
nothing. I have never bought built or owned a single model of any sort that
I have not modded to suit my own needs or ideas, usually before ever even
flying. Its all part of the hobby and fun.
